IntroductionLead-in means to introduce students gently to topics they are going to deal with, settle them down atthe beginning of a lesson and generally prepare them for the topic.Using lead-ins in language teaching is not a new idea. Some of the more recent textbooks, notably‘Step by Step’,and other teachers’ books, have warming-up exercises and cultural backgroundinformation which teachers can use as lead-in.However,for many years, because of a lack of suitabletraining in teaching methodology, many English teachers tended to neglect lead-in,the first step inpresenting a text, and went directly into the text itself. The students were confronted with somethingthey knew nothing about, and had no particular desire to know about. They were expected to adjustthemselves to the teaching context.
