<正>Carved into the one-kilometer-long side of a cliff, the Yungang Grottoes are located at the southern foothills of the Wuzhou Mountains approximately sixteen kilometers west of Datong City, Shanxi Province. Excavation of the caves at Yungang began in 453 A.D. in theNorthern Wei Dynasty. The Yungang Grottoes are a treasure house of the Chinese religious cave art whose aesthetics belongs mainly to the Chinese culture within the Oriental system, but is simultaneously influenced by the then most eye-catching-in the world-Occidental sys-
