There are now 120,000 Ph.D. students in China, bringing its numbers to just behind that of the USA and Germany. By the end of 2001, 616,000 students had been awarded master’s degrees, and 78,000 doctorates. According to statistics, in 2001 China’s university enrolment was 162,088, its graduates numbered 91,146, and school pupils amounted to 392,574.
