Harsh geographical conditions on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are a main aspect of its mystique. Since construction of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway commenced on June 29, 2001, the eyes of the world have been fixed on this wonder of human endeavor. The special report in this issue, "The Qinghai-Tibet Railway - An Engineering Miracle," gives readers an insight into this project’s design and construction.
