Mount Wutai (Five Terraces) lies in the northeastern part of Wutai County, Shanxi.A mountain chain of the Taihang Mountains, it overlooks Taiyuan off the south, is separated from the Hengshan Mountains to the north, and connects with the Yonmen Pass at its northwest end. With a circumference of some 250 kilometers, covering an area of 376 square kilometers,Mount Wutai is actually a duster of five flat-topped peaks——the northern, southern, eastern, western, and middle peaks——standing in a circle. The tops of these five towering peaks are so large that each of them measures from 6 to 7 hectares. Since the Southern and Northern dynasties (420-589), great numbers of temples had been built over the mountains until it became a mountain particularly famous for its old buildings surviving in China. According to a 1956 census, there were in Mount Wutai a total of 122 temples, with 47 well-preserved and three listed as national protection status.
