China is the world's largest coal producer but could face a shortfall of up to 80 million tons in 2005. Wu Chengmeng, vice-president of the China Association of Coal Transportation and Sales, said that the 1.8 billion tons of coal produced in 2004 only just made the balance between supply and demand for that year, as coal-powered indu-stnes such as electricity generation and steel have been driving demand since 2001.
