The Eiffel Tower is a metal tower in Paris, built for the 1889Centennial Exposition1. The most famous work of the French engineer Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923), the 300m high (984ft) tower was the highest building in the world until 1930. Although an outstanding engineering achievement, it was originally much disliked, but has become one of the great Parisian landmarks.
