To extract valuable PET from wastesoda bottles is what Jiangsu Xiake ColorSpinning Co. has been doing. This privatecompany has contributed greatly to sweep-ing out the "white pollution" in China.Meanwhile, it also creates a legend of mak-ing waste profitable. PET is a vital raw material in makingterylene in the spinning industry. The tradi-tional measure is to obtain it from crude-oilproduct PTA. But Xiake Color Spinninghas succeeded in altering the process byextracting the material from waste plasticsoft drink bottles. "This is typically circular economy,"comments Zheng Zhiyi, Chairman of ChinaChemical Fibers Association. He adds theconcept of making chemical products out ofwaste will bring a promising future espe-cially to the consumer products' marketin the countryside. Since 2000, the spinning, cloth-ing and toy industries have been devel-oping quickly. The market demand forPET soars accordingly. The area sur-rounding Shanghai is dotted with spin-ning factories, and thus a gatheringplace of PET manufacturers. Compared with China's highly mo-nopolized oil industry, the PET manufactur-ing sector is something like a little bush growingunder a huge rock. But as some industrial sourcessay, it will break the blockage eventually andgrow into a big tree.
