摘要

Color is an essential material for painting and creates marvelous world. Though it is not supposed to be one of the materials in the novel, colors in The Great Gatsby present a colorful novel in painting world. Green, traditionally associated with good images such as spring,hope and youth, is a significant color in g Gatsby’s world. Nevertheless, green has a symbolic meaning of despair and instead hope. It is not surprised that colors in this novel imply a lot, reflecting different lights from different angles. This paper is divided into three parts. Part one is a brief introduction to the symbolism, such as its definition and function.Part two expounds the importance of colors, especially in this novel like green, white and yellow. Part three states the symbolic meaning of color green in TheGreat Gatsby in details.
