Fractionation of the two stable isotopes of Li,the lightest metal in the cosmos,is very large in the earth system.Consequently, sedimentary systems and the hydrosphere have developed a variable and distinctive isotopic signature compared with the mantle, which appears very consistent in terms of Li isotopes. In short, most low-temperaturealtered materials take on an isotopically heavy character relative to the mantle;for example, seawater is currently ca.2.6 % enriched in δ7Li compared with normal mantle rocks and mid-ocean ridge basalts.
