On November 1,2015 Dr.Charles D.Michener,sometimes called the "father of bee biology" died at his home in Lawrence,Kansas at the age of 97.Born in 1918,Michener enjoyed a long career that spanned butterfly research at the American Museum of Natural History to wartime work on chiggers as disease vectors in Panama to a long and productive career in bee behavior and systematics at the University of Kansas where he arrived in 1948.Although he retired in 1989 as Distinguished Professor Emeritus and Emeritus Senior Curator,he continued to carry out important research and publish through 2015.
