There are four components in communicative competence. To be a"good"speaker of English, learners should acquire grammatical competence or linguistic knowledge in their primary learning phase and have fully awareness of sociolinguistic and discourse competence. Among the characteristics such as pronunciation, word choice, fluency, style, etc., the word choice is going to be given examples in the paper. Then an example with common sense in the tertiary level teaching is given and analyzed.Thus, the grammatical competence and sociolinguistic or discourse competence are important for a"good"speaker.
