TRANSGENIC APPROACH TO INDUCE CELL FATE REPROGRAMMING
To generate desirable cells and to restore biological function, manipulating somatic cell fates is one of fundamental scientific goals in regenerative medicine.TIhe study ofMyod-converted myoblasts in 1987 demonstrated the concept to convert cell fates by introducing a single transcription factor [1].The development of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) demonstrated the feasibility of using a combination of transcription factors to induce cell fate reprogramming [2].Subsequent studies followed this principle and established direct reprogramming approaches for the conversion between diverse lineages, even across germ layers,by using combinations of transcription factors to generate functional cells and subtypes [3].
