摘要

Great Expectations is Charles Dickens’work, which is a novel about education and growth and personal development. This thesis carefully analyzes the male character Joe Gargery, one of the most impressive creations of Charles Dickens, trying to help Pip live a decent human life. His moral integrity, his generous and magnanimous heart, and his devotion and innocence are all the best qualities that make humans human and render life worth living. He is the archetypal natural man.Through a general analysis,I will reach a conclusion that Joe Gargery as an archetypal natural man in Great Expectations is Dickens’own wish and the enlightenment for us that without too many ambitions people can lead a happy life.
