摘要

SITUATED on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, north of Dongting Lake, Hubei is known as a province with a thousand lakes and a fertile “land of fish and rice.” Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei, was one of the “four famous ancient towns,” together with Zhuxian Town in Henan, Jingdezhen in Jiangxi, and Foshan in Guangdong, in the late Ming Dynasty (1368 -1644) and early Qing Dynasty (1644- 1911), as it was not only connected with nine provinces on land but also the ocean through the Yangtze River. Since the beginning of this century, Wuhan has been regarded as the economic center of central China, with the value of its imports and exports ranking second only next to Shanghai, ahead of both Tianjin and Guangzhou.
