“I discovered that I was a descendantof Paduka Pahala at a very youngage,” recounted An Jing, a 19thgenerationdescendant of the travelerfrom what is now the southernPhilippines. Tradition holds thatPahala’s family remained in Chinaafter his demise. An serves as directorof publicity at Dezhou Sulu CultureMuseum in eastern China’s ShandongProvince. “It’s my duty to protect thetomb of the king of Sulu and preservehis deep feelings about China.”The ruler from the ancient kingdomof Sulu has rested in China for morethan 600 years, leaving a testament tothe timelessness of China-Philippinesfriendship. Twenty-two generationsof his family have protected the tombas a source of spiritual sustenanceand a historical witness of friendshipbetween the two countries.
