Kneel To The Rising Sun, one of Caldwell's best short stories, tells of the lynching of a negro sharecropper Clem who has the courage to offend his landlord Arch. However, the protagonist of the story is not Clem, but an antihero character Lonnie—a poor cowardly white sharecropper who betrays his best friend Clem and even personally joins the lynching mob. The story is noth-ing short of a minute psychological analysis of the tragic character of this pathetic antihero.
