Multiple-choice questions have long been widely used inlarge-scale language proficiency tests in China. Nowadays withthe dramatic increase in the number of test takers, the validityof this type of test is of much concern to various parties. Drawing upon the psycholinguistic theories, the author ofthis article recommends exploring the hidden process the test-takers go through in order to examine its validity. Takingmultiple-choice reading comprehension as an example, theauthor investigates the strategies the test takers employ intackling multiple-choice questions, thereby gaining insights intothe validity of the test type discussed. Such inquiry into test validity not only helps test-developersin their own validation of items, but also helps languageteachers and students in developing a positive attitude towardstests.
