Music Education in Nigeria:The Panacea of Overcoming Economic Straits

摘要

The economy of the world for some time now has been hit with meltdown.Most countries have struggled to come out of it while many are struggling to come.Among those struggling to come,many have little or no hope of succeeding.Nigeria is an example of a country struggling to come out of economic straits,but for a few years now,there is hardly any positive indication for success in the near future.As the struggle continues,policies are formulated and reformulated,and recommendations are made by economic specialists,etc.The policies and recommendations lack information about how music education could affect the economy positively.This is the basis of this paper.It corroborates existing facts in the literature about the contributions of music to economic growth and development and proposes that the Nigerian government and Nigerians should tap into the manifold resources of music to come out of the prevailing economic strait or sustain itself and themselves in it.Of course,the major way of harnessing the resources that music displays is by promoting music education.Music education offers opportunity for the development of skills which is very valuable to any society as well as creates employment opportunities by which the economic growth of the society propelled.
