An attempt to extend the life of UO2 fuel assemblies,burnable absorber nuclear fuels containing strong neutron absorbers(such as Gd and Sm)have been proposed in nuclear reactors.Boron can also be employed as a neutron absorber due to its high neutrons absorbing cross-section,which is burned out during operation of reactors.UB4 can be chosen as one additive to product B-bearing UO2 sintered pellets with high sintered densities.In addition,UB4 has been considered as an alternative storage form for geological disposition of spent fuels owing to its stability to moisture and the nonproliferation physical characteristics.
