My earliest encounter with Mr.Chapel was in 1981 during the first cultural conference of the Tibet Autonomous Region. When he was elected as the vice chairman of the TAR's Cultural Federation,I was actually doing some service work in northern Tibet.I participated in this conference, held in Lhasa,as a representative of cultural youth and heard at the time that Mr.Chapel was not only a highly knowledgeable scholar of Tibetan studies, but also a well-known poet and outstanding senior researcher of Tibetan folkloric studies.Unfortunately, his articles were mostly written in Tibetan,a language I was totally unfamiliar with.30 years later, though,I went back to work in Tibet a second time and soon began work on the Yak Museum, which gave me a golden opportunity to get to know this most famous scholar.
