The Turn of the Screw, a representative of the Victorian ghost novel,is considered to be one of the masterpieces of Henry James. By describing a young governess' haunting struggle between reality and illusion, James reveals the psychological conflicts between oppression of the human passion and primitive impulses. This paper aims to give a deeper study of The Turn of the Screw adopting the New Criticism. By a close reading of the novel, this approach provides an effective way of understanding and interpreting the theme in The Turn of the Screw.
