摘要:
Frank Chen's brilliant academic credentials belie his soul, searching experience as a grassroots worker. The holder of PhD in Psychology from Beijing Normal University started out as a shop assistant, when he was sent to suburban Shanghai in the I97os as part of the national drive to re-educate urbanites through hard labor. Looking back, Chen finds this a cherished episode in his life that afforded him ample time to read and think. "I managed to read all the books I could lay my hands on. As there were so few of them, I read them repeatedly, with great care. Many books read differently the second time you read them." The politically charged atmosphere of that time also tended to endow people of his generations with a compelling sense of social responsibility. "This is important for my later career development," says Chen.
