Originally intended to break the blockade against China and develop trade relations and exchanges between China and the rest of the world, the Exhibition of Chinese Export Commodities(the precedent of Chinese Export Commodities Fair) was inaugurated in the spring of 1957. At that time most Western countries were imposing sanctions against China and the number of countries with diplomatic relations with China numbered only about 20. Thus the Fair was China's only channel of contact with the outside world, whether in trade, cultural exchanges,or even politics.
