Linde AG, the world's largest forklift truck producer, established a joint venture with its Xiamen partner in 1993. With an initial investment of 1.4 billion yuan (US$173.6 million), it was at that time one of the largest foreign investors in the country. However, the road to profit was much longer than the German manufacturer might have expected.
