Until recently, 26-year-old Jason Lin counted himself among a privileged set - an owner of a coveted monthly subway ticket. Called the yuepiao, this pass was one of the quirks ofthe Beijing economy - due to regulations,only around 170,000 people owned them and for RMB 6o per month owners were exempt from having to pay the RMB 3 ticket price, not including transfers, for each subway ride.
