Though the lab-on-a-chip - or microfluidics - field can now be considered well established and perhaps even mature after more than two decades,it continues to grow.Type in “lab chip” or “microfluidics” into the Web of ScienceSM and you'll see what I mean.At the time of writing this article, there were 8029 published items, which had been cited 100,676 times altogether. An astounding number - in fact,“lab chip” or “microfluidics” has an H-index of 131,a statistic that many chemists, analytical or otherwise, have contributed to over the years. The number of published papers continues to increase with each successive year, with more than 1400 of the 8029 articles mentioned above appearing in 2011 alone. We are offto a good start in 2012,with more than 150 papers published in January. At this rate, the total number of papers in 2012 will easily surpass that of 2011.Clearly,more and more researchers continue to enter the lab-on-a-chip field, ensuring a healthy and dynamic research climate internationally.
