Uncommon complications of therapeutic endoscopicultrasonography： What, why, and how to prevent

摘要

There is an increasing role for endoscopic ultrasound（EUS）-guided interventions in the treatment of manyconditions. Although it has been shown that these typesof interventions are effective and safe, they continueto be considered only as alternative treatments insome situations. This is in part due to the occurrenceof complications with these techniques, which canoccur even when performed by experienced endosonographers.Although common complications have beendescribed for many procedures, it is also crucial tobe aware of uncommon complications. This reviewdescribes rare complications that have been reportedwith several EUS-guided interventions. EUS-guidedbiliary drainage is accepted as an alternative treatmentfor malignant biliary obstruction. Most of the uncommoncomplications related to this procedure involve stentmalfunction, such as the migration or malposition ofstents. Rare complications of EUS-guided pancreaticpseudocyst drainage can result from air embolism andinfection. Finally, a range of uncommon complicationshas been reported for EUS-guided celiac plexusneurolysis, involving neural and vascular injuries thatcan be fatal. The goal of this review is to identify possiblecomplications and promote an understanding ofhow they occur in order to increase general awarenessof these adverse events with the hope that they can beavoided in the future.
