IrO4+ cations have been generated and observed in mass spectra (MS),a recent letter in Nature reported [1].IX is now the highest known formal oxidation state,according to the paper.The authors have characterized [IrO4]+·Ar by IR photodissociation spectroscopy,and the spectrum is consistent with tetrahedral [IrO4]+ containing four terminal Ir=O bonds (Scheme 1).Quantum-chemical calculations support the identification of [IrO4]+ in experiments.The work was conducted by the research groups of Mingfei Zhou at Fudan University,Gary J.Schrobilgen at McMaster University,Jun Li of Tsinghua University,and Sebastian Riedel at the University of Freiburg and Free University of Berlin.
