The notion of a widespread glaciation during the late Precambrian was already well advanced (e.g. Kulling, 1934; Lee, 1936; Mawson,1949) by the time Brian Harland (Harland, 1964a,b) suggested using glacial deposits to define a new addition to the international geological timescale.
