摘要

Charles Chen (Chen Zhanxiang) was one of the founders and pioneers of China's modern urban planning.He used to be the Chief Engineer in the Construction Administration Department of the Government of Republic of China.He was mostly known through the "Liang & Chen Proposal," a Plan for the New Civic Center submitted to the newly inaugurated Municipal Government of Beijing in early 1950s by Charles and Professor Liang Sicheng.However,his contribution to China's modern urban planning is far beyond that.I don't think it adequate to evaluate him merely from the technical perspective.In fact,he was one of the key figures initiating the Occidental and Oriental coalescence in urban planning and,moreover,he was eminent for his personality charm,which transcends the regular identity as a planner or architect.
