Alkanes are the simplest organic molecules that contain only carbon-carbon single bond and carbon-hydrogen bond. These chemical bonds are very strong, making alkanes the least reactive organic molecules. On the other hand, alkanes are the major components of petroleum and natural gas.Coal and renewable biomass are also sources of alkanes, which are produced through gasification of such materials to syngas (a mixture of CO and H2) followed by Fischer-Tropsch process. The efficient and selective conversion of inexpensive, abundant saturated hydrocarbon feedstocks into value-added,more useful chemicals remains a major challenge and is considered a "holy grail" in chemistry due to the chemical inertness of alkanes [1,2].
