摘要

Ⅰ Introduction Proposals for a spacetime with more than three spatial dimensions date back to the 1920's,mainly through the work of Kaluza and Klein,in an attempt to unify the forces of nature [1].Although their initial idea failed,the formalism that they and others developed is still useful nowadays.Around 1980,string theory proposed again to enlarge the number of space dimensions,this time as a requirement for describing a consistent theory of quantum gravity.The extra dimensions were supposed to be compactified at a scale close to the Planck scale,and thus not testable experimentally in the near future.
