摘要:
This research focuses on the description of selected mathematics-related games in Anaang, South-Nigeria. Nigeria is a pluri-linguistics and pluri-ethnic society with a rich multicultural heritage. The nation has three major linguistic groups, and over four hundred non-major linguistic communities. Anaang is a non-major linguistic society. Interest in the development of the Anaang language is quite recent, dating back to 1980, though since then there have been more publications about its linguistics than about its culture. The culture of Anaang, as well as its literature exists dominantly in oral form. This affects the intergenerational transmission of rich cultural heritage, and could eventually lead to its collapse. Part of this cultural heritage includes games, which constitute one of the many interesting aspects of African verbal art. As we believe, it is pertinent to develop such an interesting genre for both outdoor and indoor activities. The major aim of this research article is to relate the relevance of mathematics ideas(mathematics games) to cultural development in Anaang, vis-a-vis Africa, and to harness the relevant activities of the Anaang culture, which are encoded in games with mathematics concepts. This work is purely descriptive and tends to employ diagrammatic illustrations to provide insights into the activities of the various mathematics games in Anaang. Data for the work is based on selected games used by children and adults for indoor/outdoor recreation. Since children assimilate numbers, words, sentences, and figures with ease in short songs/rhymes and games, this paper proposes that verses of mathematics games should be developed, documented, preserved and used for the learning of some aspects of mathematics like counting, numeration, calculation, fractions, addition, subtractions, division, ratios, Highest Common Factor(HCF), Lowest Common Multiple(LCM), etc, as well as culture. This paper is relevant in the understanding of the interface between recreational linguistics(culture) and mathe
