Porphyrins are a class of heterocyclic macrocycles, containing four pyrrolic subunits interconnected at the α-positions with four methine (=CH-) groups.Porphyrins are called life pigments owing to their wide existence in natural functional systems such as heme, chlorophyll and Vitamin B12,as well as their essential biological functions in respiration and photosynthesis. In fact, many pioneering achievements in porphyrin chemistry were awarded the Nobel Prize. For instance,Fischer and Woodward obtained Nobel Prize for their contribution on the synthesis of heme and vitamin B12,respectively.In recent decades, porphyrins and porphyrinoids have drawn much attention because of their structural diversities and wide applications. Thus, expanded, contracted, isomeric and core-modified porphyrins have been developed and used in dye-sensitized solar cells, catalysts, photodynamic therapy and so on [1].Here we would like to make a brief perspective on the recent development of porphyrin chemistry, with emphasis on the representative work from China.
