Outside the faculty’s residential quarters in Beijing Foreign Studies University stands a small, plain gray,four-story building surrounded by locust trees.Unlike the new structures around it,this one shows the vicissitudes of time.Isabel Crook,104,recipient of the Friendship Medal of the People’s Republic of China, has lived on the third floor of this old building for 65years.Her apartment is simple and a bit crowded. There are English books and old photos on the bookshelf, portraits of Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai on the wall of the living room.
