In 1624, P. Antonio de Andrade, a Portuguese missionary with the Indian Agra Society of Jesus, reached Zhaburang, capital of the Guge Kingdom in Ngari via non.hem India. With the support of the Guge king, he built a church. In 1633, the upper-class monks revolted in collaboration with the royal families of Ladakh, and overthrew the rule of the Guge king. Missionaries were expelled, and Zhaburang lost its importance and went into terminal decline.
