Reading ability is very important in English learning. English reading teaching is critical for the improvement of English ability. However, most teachers simply stop at the cohesion of a single word while teaching English, ignoring discourse analysis. This paper analyzes the cohesion and coherence between the texts as well as the main body and subject. Moreover, the author also illustrates the application of thematic progression theory in college English reading teaching and the importance of discourse analy-sis, which hopes to help further improve the effectiveness of college English teaching.
