My Last Duchess is the representative work written by Victorian poet Robert Browning, known for its genre of dramatic monologue. The using of paradox, ambiguity, irony is unified in the poem, forming a series of tensions and conflicts, shaping the viv-id image of the Duke and Duchess, producing a unique artistic effect. Close reading, a critical method of New Criticism, will be ap-plied to analyze the techniques of the poem, so as to better show the characters depicted in the poem and reflect the paradox of the duke's human nature.
