摘要

General education aims at cultivating responsible, well-rounded social men and citizens of a country. By years of reform and practice, American universities have accumulated abundant experience in general education. Taking its experience for reference to promote the scientific development of general education in China has very important practical significance.This paper discusses general education in American universities,and then reflects on its significance to general education in China. The study is useful in providing insights into American culture,as well as in offering a comparison with the Chinese education system.Some domestic and foreign experts have studied similar topics. For instance,Yang Jie has written a book called General Education Course in Universities in which he mainly talked about general education in Japan. But this paper mainly studies general education in American universities.There are three parts in this paper. The first part introduces the history of general education in American universities. The second part includes characteristics of general education in American universities. The third part focuses on curriculum systems of general education in elite universities. And the fourth part talks about the edification of American general education to China.
