Stem cell pluripotency and differentiation are globalprocesses regulated by several pathways that havebeen studied intensively over recent years. Nitricoxide (NO) is an important molecule that affects geneexpression at the level of transcription and translationand regulates cell survival and proliferation in diversecell types. In embryonic stem cells NO has a dual role,controlling differentiation and survival, but the molecularmechanisms by which it modulates these functions arenot completely defined. NO is a physiological regulatorof cell respiration through the inhibition of cytochromec oxidase. Many researchers have been examiningthe role that NO plays in other aspects of metabolismsuch as the cellular bioenergetics state, the hypoxiaresponse and the relationship of these areas to stemcell stemness.
